Can Dogs Eat Potatoes?
Unfortunately, the answer isn’t as easy as yes or no. We all know potatoes are a healthy addition to any diet, containing vitamin C, B6, iron and magnesium. Potatoes are healthy for dogs if prepared correctly and not overfed. Raw potatoes contain amounts of solanine, which can be toxic to dogs. However, cooking potatoes reduces the amount of solanine, making them safe.
Can Dogs Eat Sweet Potatoes?
Sweet potatoes are a better and healthier option than white potatoes. Sweet potatoes are more nutritious for your canine companion, with vitamins A, C, B6, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Bake or boil potatoes with no added ingredients, including oil, butter or salt.
- Potatoes are not recommended for diabetic dogs as it can cause sugar spikes.
- Start with small amounts to make sure your dog can digest potatoes properly.
- Removing the skin is strongly suggested as it can be difficult to digest.
*Always check with your veterinarian before making any significant changes to your dog’s diet.
