Are your potatoes pre-washed?

Our potatoes are pre-washed, with most varieties being triple washed. Some people prefer to rinse them again before cooking at home.

Do I need to peel these potatoes?

There is actually no need to peel Tasteful Selections® potatoes before cooking them. Their skins are very thin and taste great, so there is no worries about using them in any potato recipe with the skins on.

Microwaving Instructions:

Ingredients:

* 1 bag Tasteful Selections® potatoes

Directions:

Add potatoes to a microwave-safe bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Cook the potatoes 8-12 minutes, stirring once. You may hear some popping noises as some of the potatoes will “pop” out of their skins. This is normal when microwaving these potatoes.

Caution: as you remove the plastic wrap to stir the potatoes, please use caution as steam will escape from the container. Always open plastic wrap away from you. Once potatoes are cooked, drain the excess water from the container before adding your own seasonings or toppings.

Can I microwave the potatoes in the bag?

Only our Season & Savor® , SteamPak Mini and organic Steam & Savor® products are microwaveable.

All other packages of Tasteful Selections should be removed from the package before cooking. Add potatoes to a microwave-safe bowl and cover. Cook the potatoes 8-12 minutes, stirring once. You may hear some popping noises as some of the potatoes will “pop” out of their skins. This is normal when microwaving these potatoes.

Caution: Please use caution as steam will escape from the container.

Once potatoes are cooked, drain the excess water from the container before adding your own seasonings or toppings.

Storage

How do I store potatoes and is there an expiration date?

Because potatoes are fresh produce, how long they last will depend more on how they are stored. For the best and longest storage possible, you'll want to store your potatoes in a cool, dark place. The optimum storage is 45- to 55-degrees Fahrenheit, and potatoes store best in the dark. Keeping them this way should allow them to last for several weeks. Storing potatoes in the refrigerator will cause the starch in the them to break down into sugars, which may change the flavor, so if you must refrigerate them, use your potatoes within a few weeks to get the best flavor possible!

Can I freeze potatoes?

We recommend that you cook and eat the potatoes fresh for the best possible flavor. If you do wish to freeze them, we recommend that you boil them, let them cool and then freeze them. Please note that the potatoes will have some excess liquid to them upon thawing, so their consistency will not be as lovely as eating them freshly cooked.

My potatoes are greening, what is causing this?

The greening you're experiencing occurs when potatoes have been exposed to too much light, either natural or artificial, that gives the potatoes a sort of "sunburn." While greening is a result of light exposure, the visible greening can be delayed. Potatoes exposed to light may be packaged and continue to green beyond our last inspection point, even though we make every effort to avoid this. Eating the green portion of the potato can give a very bitter flavor.
